So I asked the ex, and a fair few fellas after him, what lingerie they did find sexy, and the answers ranged from helpful and unexpected to uninteresting and exasperating. Because men (men are my experience, quite possibly this goes for other genders, too), are, you know, not all the same. That is to say, they’re not all the walking, talking boners that Superbowl commercials might lead you to believe. 

My informal surveys about what constitutes sexy lingerie turned up answers like: “Something red.” “Something black.” “Something white.” “Something sheer? But also, that gives coverage.” “Like, thigh-highs. With the little straps. The dangly straps?” (GARTERS THEY ARE CALLED GARTERS.)  As you can see, some dudes are not really sure what turns them on with regards to lingerie, and there’s definitely a vocabulary issue.

But, some of my unwitting test subjects had a really established idea of what they wanted in the saucy undergarment department. Like, “That teddy looks good, but fuchsia isn’t very sexy. I don’t know why. Maybe in blue? Like, a deep blue? That could be hot. And without those bows on the nipples.” Because, again, our slampiec— er, romantic partners whom we sometimes are committed to and love, are human beings with varying tastes and opinions.

So, learn from my $35 mistake, and never purchase an overpriced scrap of satin simply because you assume its make and mark alone mean that it holds mysterious, magical desirability powers. No brand, except for possibly Agent Provocateur, holds the secret to sexy sex. (Seriously, though, I think they might have nailed it. Accordingly, their “playsuits” cost about a year’s income… If you want to open that Pandora’s box, you’ve gotta pony up, babes.)

As with most clothing, when one purchases lingerie, one should purchase with oneself in mind — mostly. Because while I prefer for my lingerie to be stuff I can wear alone around the apartment, eating chicken wings or whatever (pro tip: babydolls with strategic ruffles hide chicken-wing belly), I also am not gonna lie to you with a line like “Lingerie is all about inner sexy. Lingerie is for you.” It just isn’t entirely true. 

Like sex, wearing lingerie is at least 50% about you, so you feeling good is key; that much is true. But you also can’t ignore that you’re sharing a bed — or Jetta — with another person. That would be really weird sex, no? Halal Sex Shop Opening For Muslims In Mecca, Saudi Arabia

Halal is a lifestyle for many adherents of Islam, and the topic of sexuality is mostly taboo among Muslims. Combining the two might seem a toxic mix, but the recent appearance of sex shops catering to Muslims -- even in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the center of the Islamic faith -- indicates there is a market for certain adult products.

A store called Halal Sex Shop is expected to open soon in Mecca, according to a report on Alyaoum24, an Arabic news portal, which did not specify an opening date. Owner Abdelaziz Aouragh said the products at his store are halal-observant and target married couples trying to enhance their sex lives. “Our products [do] not include inflatable dolls, but products that increase feelings of sensuality and improve the atmosphere between the couple in [their] sexual relationship,” Aouragh told Alyaoum24. While halal typically refers to food and beverages that are permissible for consumption by Muslims, it also guides the use of objects under Islamic law.

With the help of German company Beate Uhse, one of the largest sex product vendors in Europe, Aouragh is reportedly selling 18 Islam-appropriate sex toys in his Mecca store. 

Muslims are typically viewed as not very sexually active, and many people think Muslim women are repressed sexually within their marriages, but Aouragh wants to change the negative stereotypes. “The image of women in the kitchen with burqa is not a true picture,” he said. “There is a lot of love and respect Islam has for adult women. Our store puts women at the center, offers information, and provides answers to frequently asked questions on sex.”

Aouragh, a Moroccan Muslim, consulted with an Islamic cleric in Saudi Arabia before receiving permission to sell the halal sex products that would lead to “the improvement of the sexual relationship between husband and wife,” he said in an interview with Agence France-Presse last year. Aouragh also founded the Amsterdam-based sex product vendor El Asira several years back, which now has a successful online division, according to reports. 

The first Halal Sex Shop opened in Turkey in 2013, Alyaoum24 reported. But previous reports of halal sex shops in various European cities with large Muslim populations have been discredited.

18th-Century Sex Toy Found In Ancient Latrine

Polish archaeologists digging an ancient latrine in the Baltic city of Gdańsk have stumbled upon a 250-year-old sex toy.

The phallic object is "large, thick, made of leather filled with bristles, and has a wooden tip," the Regional Office for the Protection of Monuments in Gdansk said in a press release.

Dating from the second half of the 1700s, the artificial penis was found "preserved in excellent condition."

"This is an extraordinary find for people researching the history of erotica," he added.

Other objects found in the latrine include fragments of pottery and jewellery. Several remains of wooden swords found nearby suggest the site was a fencing school.
